The temple was still, seven statues stood in a circle in the center all evenly spaced apart. Each statue looked like a dog type beast about horse size with long flowing manes and hooves like those of a horse. One of them had deer elf like horns while the others had horns of different land beasts. All of them stood proud and noble frozen in time with guardian position over the temple.
As the wind blew through the windows one of the statues twitched its ear. The one with the elk horns. Slowly as the wind continued to blow a piece of stone fell away from the statue exposing white fur beneath. The eyes of the statue light up an ice blue as they blinked a few times and the mouth opened up in a yawn. More stone falling away from the jaw.
A strange call like that of an elk rang free from its mouth as it shook its body like a wet dog, more stone falling from its white body. Its horse like feet were feathered around the hoof with long fur almost like that of a Friesian horse, its tail was long and dog like, much like a saluki dogs tail. It was a thin flexible tail with short hair half way down the tail and then a curtail of long silky fur, brown to match its mane.
Pawing at the ground it screeched again and looked about at the other statues feeling a sudden loneliness take over it. Moving forward it lowered its head and tilted it sideways as if it were sad. Sniffing the air its long tall ears pointed in the direction of the other statues as its voice called out, a masculine voice that had a hint of femininity to it. "My brothers, why, all stone, how long have I been?" It blinked again dropping its jaw slowly and turning to an open window. Its voice came not from its mouth but was projected straight from its mind into the world, riding on the wind, floating about as if a voice had come forth from its mouth, yet its mouth did not move. "Why are we still alive?"
